記憶をまとう香り 〜40年、私と香水の物語・Wearing Memories Through Fragrance— My 40-Year Journey with Perfume

香りには、その時代の記憶を一瞬でよみがえらせる、不思議な力があります。
私は若い頃から香水が大好きです。
そのきっかけになったのは、ニナ リッチの「レールデュタン」でした。
40年ほど前、職場のお客様から海外出張のお土産としていただいたものでした。当時は海外の香水が今ほど身近ではなく、日本で手に入る種類も限られていました。
箱を開け、初めてその香りをまとった時の嬉しさを、今でもよく覚えています。
白い鳩が寄り添う美しいボトルも印象的で、若い私にとっては、とても特別な香水でした。
あの時の感動がきっかけとなり、私は香水の世界に惹かれていきました。
その後、友人が使っていたゲランの「ミツコ」の香りに出会います。
とてもいい香りだと思ったものの、バブル絶頂期だった当時でも、若い私には驚くほど高価に感じられました。
欲しいと思いながらもなかなか決心がつかず、何度もお店へ足を運びました。
当時の私には、香水にそれほどのお金をかけるという発想がなく、購入すること自体が大きなチャレンジだったのです。
それでも思い切って手にしたミツコは、今も変わらず愛用している大切な香りのひとつです。
深みのある濃厚な香りで、以前はよく使っていましたが、アルコールをほとんど飲まなくなってからは、出番が少し減りました。
好きな香りは今も変わりません。
ただ、私の暮らしや過ごし方が変わり、その香りが似合う場面も少しずつ変化してきたのだと思います。
今でも若い頃から変わらず好きなのは、シャネル N°5、ゲランのミツコ、そしてニナ リッチのレールデュタン。
どの香りにも、その頃の景色や思い出が重なっています。
ノースカロライナに暮らし始めてから、とても好きになったのが、クライヴ・クリスチャンの「X」という香水です。
華やかで存在感のある香りなので、着物を着る日には自然と手が伸びます。
香水の中でもかなり高価ですが、不思議と「今日はこの香りをまといたい」と思わせてくれる、特別な一本です。
ただ最近の外出は、ジムや買い物など、日常的な用事が中心です。
そのため今は、以前よりも軽やかで爽やかな香りを選ぶことが増えました。
そんな今の暮らしに、ちょうどよく感じているのがジョー マローンです。
香水は、お店で試香紙につけて香りを確かめるのと、実際に肌につけるのとでは印象が変わることがあります。
さらに、つけた直後だけではなく、時間の経過とともに香りも変化していきます。
「この香りが好き」と思って購入したのに、何日か使ってみると「あれ？」と感じたり、思っていたほど出番が増えなかったりすることも少なくありません。
そのため最近は、いきなりフルボトルを購入するのではなく、まずはいくつかの香りを少量ずつ試せるセットを選ぶことがあります。
実際に何日か使いながら、自分の肌との相性や、その日の気分、季節、外出する場所との相性を確かめられるところが気に入っています。
今回試したセットの中では、「ピオニー ＆ ブラッシュ スエード コロン」と「イングリッシュ ペアー ＆ フリージア コロン」が特に印象に残りました。
どちらもやさしい花の香りが広がり、華やかすぎず、幅広い年代の方が楽しみやすい香りだと感じます。
「ウッド セージ ＆ シー ソルト コロン」は、爽やかで軽やかな香りです。
ジムへ行く前後にも使いやすく、性別を問わず楽しめる香りだと思います。
「ミルラ ＆ トンカ コロン インテンス」は、この中では特に濃厚で奥行きのある香りです。
ワインを楽しむようなレストランや、少し特別な夜のお出かけに似合いそうです。
私はこの香りが好きで、フルボトルも愛用しています。
3万円を超える香水ですが、濃厚な香りは少量でも長く続くため、一本をゆっくり楽しむことができます。
香水は年々価格が上がっているように感じます。
その中でジョー マローンは、決して安いブランドではありませんが、高級フレグランスの中では比較的選びやすい価格帯ではないでしょうか。
私にとっては、価格と品質のバランスがとても良く、普段使いしやすい軽やかな香りから、特別な日に似合う濃厚な香りまで、暮らしや気分に合わせて選べるところも魅力です。
香水もジュエリーも、生活に絶対必要なものではありません。
けれど、どちらも身につけずに外出すると、何か大切なものを忘れてきたような気持ちになることがあります。
ただ、ジムへ行く時は、いつも身につけているピアスだけを残して、それ以外のジュエリーは外します。
ピアスは、私らしさをそっと支えてくれる小さなお守りのような存在だからです。
汗もかきますし、トレーニンググローブを使うので、指輪やブレスレット、ネックレスはないほうが快適だからです。
そんな日でも、香りだけはまといたいと思っています。
香りには、その時の景色や気持ち、そして出会った人まで思い出させてくれる、不思議な力があります。
レールデュタンを初めてまとった日の感動も、ミツコを思い切って購入した時の高揚感も、今では香りとともに大切な思い出になっています。
毎日が少し退屈に感じたり、「何か新しいことを始めたい」と思っている方は、いつもと同じ買い物を繰り返すだけではなく、香水という新しい世界に触れてみるのも素敵な選択かもしれません。
香りは毎日の暮らしを少し豊かにし、新しい経験や思い出を運んできてくれます。
そして何年、何十年経ったあと、その香りはきっと今日という一日まで思い出させてくれるのでしょう。
私にとって香水は、ただ良い香りを楽しむためのものではありません。
人生の思い出を、香りとともにそっと重ねていける存在なのだと思っています。

イラストは、私にとって特に思い入れのある香水ばかりだったので、一つひとつのボトルや、その空気感まで、できるだけ実物に近づけたいと思いながら、何度も調整を重ねて仕上げました。
40年の思い出を一枚の絵として残せたことは、私にとっても特別な時間でした。
イラストもまた、大切な思い出を残していく、新しい表現方法のひとつになっています。

Fragrance has a wonderful way of bringing memories back to life.
A single scent can instantly take us back to a special moment, a place, or even a different chapter of our lives.
I have loved perfume since I was young.
It all began with L'Air du Temps by Nina Ricci.
About forty years ago, a customer from my workplace brought it back for me as a souvenir from an overseas business trip. In those days, imported perfumes were much harder to find in Japan, and the selection was very limited.
I still remember the excitement of opening the box and wearing that fragrance for the very first time.
The elegant bottle, with its two white doves, was just as beautiful as the scent itself. To my younger self, it felt incredibly special.
That unforgettable experience opened the door to a lifelong love of perfume.
Later, I discovered Mitsouko by Guerlain through a friend.
I fell in love with its rich and sophisticated scent, but even during Japan's economic bubble, it felt incredibly expensive for someone my age.
I visited the perfume counter several times before finally deciding to buy it.
Back then, spending that much money on a perfume felt like a major decision.
Even so, Mitsouko remains one of the fragrances I treasure most today.
Its deep, elegant character made it one of my favorites for many years.
These days, however, I wear it less often since I rarely drink alcohol anymore.
My taste in fragrance hasn't changed.
Instead, my lifestyle has changed, and so have the occasions that suit each perfume.
The fragrances I have loved for decades are still the same: Chanel N°5, Guerlain Mitsouko, and Nina Ricci L'Air du Temps.
Each of them carries memories of a different time in my life.
After moving to North Carolina, I fell in love with another fragrance—X by Clive Christian.
Its elegant presence makes it my favorite choice whenever I wear a kimono.
It is certainly one of the most luxurious perfumes I own, yet every time I wear it, it reminds me that some moments deserve something truly special.
These days, however, most of my outings are much simpler—going to the gym, running errands, or enjoying everyday life.
Because of that, I now find myself reaching for lighter, fresher fragrances more often.
That's where Jo Malone London has become a perfect fit for my lifestyle.
Trying a perfume on a paper strip and wearing it on your skin can be two completely different experiences.
A fragrance also changes over time, revealing different notes as the hours pass.
Sometimes I think I've found "the one," only to realize after wearing it for a few days that it doesn't suit me as well as I expected.
That's why I often prefer purchasing discovery sets before committing to a full bottle.
They allow me to wear each fragrance for several days and discover how it feels with my skin, my mood, the season, and even where I'm going.
Among the fragrances I recently tried, Peony & Blush Suede and English Pear & Freesia stood out the most.
Both are beautifully floral, elegant without being overpowering, and easy to enjoy at any age.
Wood Sage & Sea Salt is fresh, light, and effortless.
It's a fragrance I can comfortably wear before or after going to the gym, and I think it suits both women and men.
Myrrh & Tonka Cologne Intense is the richest fragrance in the collection.
Its warm, luxurious character feels perfect for a wonderful dinner or a special evening out.
I love it so much that I own a full-size bottle.
Although it costs over ¥30,000 in Japan, only a small amount is needed because the fragrance lasts so beautifully.
Perfume has become more expensive over the years.
Jo Malone is certainly not inexpensive, but compared with many luxury fragrance houses, I think it offers an excellent balance between quality and price.
From light fragrances for everyday life to richer scents for special occasions, I enjoy choosing one that matches my mood and the moment.
Neither perfume nor jewelry is essential for daily life.
Yet whenever I leave home without them, it somehow feels as though I've forgotten something important.
When I go to the gym, however, I wear only the small earrings that I never take off.
They feel like a quiet little talisman that reminds me of who I am.
Everything else comes off.
Sweat and training gloves make rings, bracelets, and necklaces impractical.
Even on those days, though, I still like to wear a fragrance.
Scents have a remarkable ability to bring back not only memories, but also the emotions, places, and people connected to them.

The excitement of finally buying Mitsouko...
Those moments still live on every time I smell those fragrances.
If life has started to feel a little repetitive, or if you're looking for something new to brighten your days, perhaps perfume could become a new world to explore.
A fragrance can enrich everyday life, create beautiful memories, and quietly accompany us through the years.
For me, perfume is more than simply smelling beautiful.
It is a gentle way of carrying my memories with me, one fragrance at a time.
These illustrations feature some of the perfumes that hold the most special memories for me.
I spent a great deal of time refining them, trying to recreate each bottle and its unique atmosphere as faithfully as possible.
Being able to preserve forty years of memories in a single illustration made the creative process a truly special experience.
For me, illustration has also become a new way to preserve the memories that matter most.
