The time I was called out to on a dark road and turned around to see someone's face go pale
I went to help an acquaintance weed their property.
Since it had gotten dark, I decided to carry a large load to the grass disposal area to finish the day's work.
While my acquaintance was gathering the grass, I went ahead, and saw a girl walking her dog being persistently hit on by a man on a bicycle under a streetlight.
She was clearly troubled, so I pretended to be a relative and called out to her, saying, "My father is waiting over there, so come along quickly."
However, I had a basket overflowing with grass on my back, a massive amount of loose grass in my arms, and a straw hat on my head.
Looking at me from the front, I must have looked like a grass-type Mukku with only my face and limbs shaved.
If a raw-skinned Mukku were standing next to Gachapin, children would surely scream in terror.
The arrival of such an ominous presence caused not just the man, but even the girl to lose their words and freeze in place.
I called out to the girl again, saying, "Come here."
However, my voice was raspy, which gave off an atmosphere like I was about to drag her into a swamp.
Of course, I had no intention of turning the girl into fertilizer for my grass.
I just wanted to save her from the persistent harassment, but I couldn't help but feel that my appearance was too unsettling for it to come across well.
Even though I was supposed to be on the girl's side, I had been getting barked at by her dog more than anyone else.
As I was doing this, the grass bundle reached its limit, and about half of it collapsed to my feet with a loud noise.
Was I evolving into a second form?
The man hitting on her saw a monster suddenly shed a massive amount of grass from its body, turned pale, and reflexively took half a step back.
I heard the sound of footsteps on the dirt behind me.
When I turned around, a strangely shaped shadow was swaying and gradually approaching from the darkness, and eventually, the streetlight slowly revealed the full silhouette of the shadow.
Standing there was a man who had also turned into a grass-Mukku.
My acquaintance, who had left later, had caught up.
There were now two monsters.
I had a sneaking suspicion that might happen, but it was a very eerie entrance.
Thinking that I had gone through the same process myself, it was a bit of a mental blow.
Judging by our appearance, we were clearly of the same species.
Since I had just said "My father is waiting," from the harasser's perspective, it must have looked like the long-awaited arrival of the "waiting father."
The dog finally hid behind the girl.
I said to the man,
"My father has arrived, so..."
I told him.
If he didn't leave after that, I would have had no choice but to surround him with my acquaintance and dance Maimai to confuse him.
The "Maimai-esassa" part would have looked quite impressive.
The man replied,
"Oh... yes," he said, using polite language for some reason, and left without us even having to dance.
However, from the girl's perspective, the situation remained tense as one human had left, but the number of grass monsters had doubled.
We made her understand that despite our appearance, we were the same kind of living beings as her, and we waited together for her parents to come pick her up.
It bothered me a little that she said on the phone,
"The grass person saved me,"
but I was glad she was safe.
It turned out the girl had just moved to the area and was feeling lonely.
I felt relieved that I had called out to her at that time.
We safely handed the girl over to her family.
It was like a scene where a monster returns a human child who wandered into its forest territory to its parents, and they share their first moment of connection.
[Postscript]
I heard that a box of sweets arrived a few days later, but my acquaintance ate it all before I could get any.
It was a report after the fact.
Apparently, they were GODIVA chocolates and were very delicious.
I quietly imagined a grass monster being kicked and exploding by a Sunday morning hero to keep my composure.
May you scatter along with the grass.
