Bone-like erosion? The true nature of stone-like knots
Creak, crunch, crunch, crunch...
During treatment, I sometimes encounter a hardness through the acupuncture needle that is clearly different from a normal knot, making me want to say, 'Wow, what is this?'
It's not squishy, and it's not soft. It feels almost like bone.
I have taken to calling this 'bone erosion' on my own.
The first time I encountered it was on the shoulder blade.
It was so hard that the needle wouldn't pass through, but at a certain moment, it slipped right through, and the patient's expression suddenly changed.
When I can successfully find and adjust this sensation, something like 'Can it really change this much in just one session?' can happen. Of course, it doesn't happen every time, but the speed of improvement is completely different.
As for the true nature of this 'erosion,' I believe it iscalcification.
Calcification is a change where tissue that is originally soft becomes as hard as stone.
It is said to be caused by long-term inflammation, poor blood flow, lack of movement, and adhesions, and it is a phenomenon that easily occurs in areas under high stress, such as the shoulders and Achilles tendons. It is also seen in internal organs and is by no means rare.
It is often thought that 'it can't be helped because it's aging,' but in my clinical practice, I have seen many cases where pain and movement change significantly when changes occur in that area.
If it is at a level that an acupuncturist can address, the body will still respond.
This 'stone-like knot' may be lurking in the background of that pain that hasn't changed for years. Even if it looks hardened like stone, the human body has surprising plasticity.
I am applying acupuncture today to that possibility.
