[Radio English Conversation] English Note for Parenting Moms #101 Good for you
Good morning, this is Harukaze.
It's August starting today!!!
A month goes by in a flash.
Maybe because it's summer vacation, I see
lots of parents with their children 🌻
Today, I also studied the July 27th lesson
of NHK Radio English Conversation.
This month's theme is "Useful Phrases."
The theme for June and July was "Being Considerate,"
but
they say this month is "Useful Phrases."
I always feel excited the moment I open the first page.
So, let's do our best this time too ✊🏻
📖 Lesson point for this time: Useful phrase "Good for you"
Here is the KEY SENTENCE 🔑
Good for you.
(That's great for you)
First, I will listen to the dialogue without looking at the textbook.
✏️ Here are the words and sentences I couldn't catch
I wanted to let you know that an old friend of mine from Tokyo, Mr. Emori, will be staying with me for about a month.
It’s been quite a while since we last saw each other.
Good for you. Since you live alone now, it’ll be nice to have company for a change.
It should be a lively month.
📖 First sentence
I wanted to let you know…
(I wanted to let you know.)
This is really used often in both daily conversation and at work, isn't it?
It seems to have a slightly softer nuance than "tell you."
a friend of mine
"one of my friends"
which appeared before
a colleague of mine
a neighbor of mine
are the same, too 💦
📖 Second sentence
It’s been quite a while since we last saw each other.
(It’s been a long time since we last met.)
It’s been a while since… is used very often.
I was able to hear 'it's been' this time!
📖 Third sentence
Good for you.
is the KEY SENTENCE for this lesson
Additionally, the ones we learned last time,
That’s great!
That’s wonderful!
That’s awesome!
are also phrases that mean
"That's wonderful!" or "Good for you!"
It’ll be nice to have company.
(It’s nice to have someone around.)
Here, company does not mean
"a business corporation" but
someone to be with / companionship
instead.
This is a very English way of using the word ✨
Also,
for a change meansfor a change / once in a while
.
For example,
Let’s eat out for a change.
(Let’s eat out for a change.)
This seems useful for everyday life!
📍 Here are some phrases you can use daily
✔️ Good for you.
(That's good)
✔️ Nice.
(That's good)
✔️ That’s great to hear.
(I'm glad to hear that)
To all the moms and dads out there,
it's hot again today, but let's do our best!
Thank you once again
for reading.
See you again!
