November 2025 Long Interview
"Ukuwarenga"
Director Park Jung-il Interview

We are publishing on note the interview that could not fit into the monthly schedule paper for the Seventh Art Theater and Theater Seven.

Director Park Jung-il

1. Please tell us about the background of the production.

My previous film was made with my Brazilian-Japanese friends. Through my interactions with them, I thought it might be okay to make a film themed around my own circumstances next, so I started writing the script.

2. Was there anything you were conscious of when creating this work based on your own experiences as a director?

I was careful not to let my ego show as much as possible. The protagonist and I are from different generations, and above all, this is not a work made only for Zainichi Koreans.

3. What are your thoughts behind the title "Ukuwarenga"?

Actually, there is no particular meaning. I just thought it would be good if it could convey a sense of being stateless. I wanted to avoid a title that would make people think of Zainichi Koreans.

4. Please give a message to the audience for the Osaka release.

There are many Zainichi Koreans in the Kansai region. Of course, I want them to see it, but I produced this work as a letter of appreciation to my Japanese friends who support me.
Regardless of nationality or situation, I believe we can empathize with each other's worries, pain, and anxieties. I truly hope that many people will come to the theater to watch it.

"Ukuwarenga" will be screened at Theater Seven starting Saturday, November 15th.
