Introduction
An outfielder with a strong arm and excellent defensive skills. He is known for his long sideburns.
In 2010, he was selected to succeed Koichi Ogata, who had retired the previous year, and had a breakout season. He achieved his first All-Star Game appearance, reached the required number of plate appearances, hit over .300, and reached double-digit home runs. Furthermore, he recorded 10 outfield assists, the most in the league that year, and won the Golden Glove Award.
He was hit by pitches very frequently. Even when he set the Japanese record of 15 consecutive times reaching base in 2013, which is surprisingly impressive, three of those plate appearances were due to being hit by a pitch.
His nickname, "Charlie," comes from the Hiroshima dialect word "chari," which refers to sideburns. He was also loved for his kind personality.
