Meeting Rin | The 'Other Coco' I Met at an Adoption Event

About ten months after we brought Coco home, our family went to a pet shop.

That day, an NPO-sponsored dog and cat adoption event was being held in front of the store. That was where Rin was. A small white dog was sitting there, perched neatly. She was quiet, reserved, and looked as if she were wearing a sign that said, 'I'm a good girl.'

At first glance, I thought:

'This dog... she looks just like Coco!'

Coco is brown, and Rin is white. They look completely different in color, but at that moment, their eyes and overall vibe looked identical to me. When you feel a spark of destiny, even your eyesight conveniently adjusts. When I compared them later, they didn't really look that much alike. That day, I wasn't looking with my eyes, but with my desires.

I called my mom, who was inside the store.

'There's a dog here that looks like Coco!'

Mom gave a very reserved reply, 'Hmm, maybe she does?' Looking back, that wasn't agreement, but a defensive posture to avoid being swept up in my enthusiasm. But I was already convinced. This dog had to be Coco's sibling. Even though there was no blood relation at all, a family tree was already complete in my mind.

However, we already had a dog at home. A third dog was a different story. You can't just bring one home because they're cute. There's food, vet visits, and walks to consider. If we made one wrong move, we might end up being the ones who have to give them away, just like someone else had to do with these dogs. Thinking that, I couldn't just say, 'Let's take her home,' so lightly.

With a heavy heart, we left the pet shop. The car started moving, but the white dog remained sitting in my mind. She was quiet, looking at us with a face that seemed so well-behaved.

On the way home, I finally said,

'Hey, can we go back and see her just one more time?'

We turned back to the adoption event, and before we knew it, we had Rin in the car.

Encounters arrive wearing the mask of coincidence. And while you're telling yourself, 'Maybe it's just my imagination,' they've already comfortably settled into the passenger seat.

That day, I thought Rin looked like Coco.

In reality, they didn't look much alike at all.

The only thing they had in common was a talent for barging into my life without hesitation.
