My Favorite Cover Songs (151) "Peace Piece" by Bill Evans, Kronos Quartet, Green-House, Herbie Mann, Niño Josele
Continuing from last time, we look at Bill Evans' (1929-80) second album, "Everybody Digs Bill Evans" (1959). This original piece, performed by Evans on solo piano, is the pinnacle of beauty and a world of profound mystery; it is a work that truly defines Bill Evans. It seems it was originally an intro to the song "Some Other Time" that was completed as an independent piece.
I wonder if the title should be translated as "A Piece of Peace" or "A Fragment of Serenity"? Given the tone of the song, it is often covered by classical and ambient musicians.
This is from the Kronos Quartet's album "Music of Bill Evans" (1985). Evans' works are performed here by a string quartet.
The American ambient artist Green-House released a single in 2021.
Herbie Mann (1930-2003), an American jazz flutist active since the 1950s, featured it on his 1997 Bill Evans tribute album, "Peace Pieces." He had been performing with Evans since the 1960s.
Niño Josele (1974- ) is a Spanish jazz guitarist who featured it on his 2006 album dedicated to Bill Evans.
