Smooth Out Your Relationships with Zen Teachings! 5 Basics of Communication
I don't know how to interact with people at work...
I'm not good at talking with other moms...
I want to communicate better with my children...
Relationships are unavoidable in life, yet many people struggle with them.
When communication fails, it can lead to misunderstandings and trouble.
Why not look to the teachings of Zen for help?
Zen is a school of Buddhism that originated in India about 1,500 years ago and developed uniquely in China; its teachings are rich with hints for smoothing out human relationships.
In this article, we will introduce five basics of communication based on Zen teachings.
The Zen Mindset for Communication

In Zen, communication is considered an important act of connecting your heart with another's.
To achieve good communication, the following mindsets are valued.
Zen emphasizes respecting everyone as a being that possesses Buddha-nature.
By respecting the other person's opinions and feelings and treating them with care, they will likely respect you in return.
When you are swayed by negative emotions like anger or frustration, communication does not go well.
Through Zen breathing techniques and meditation, try to keep your mind calm and communicate cool-headedly.
When talking to someone, focus on the "here and now" without being caught up in past events or anxieties about the future.
By listening seriously to what the other person has to say, they will feel heard and gain a sense of security.
Words have a significant impact on the hearts of others.
Avoid using words that hurt others, and try to use kind and compassionate language.
Also, by using positive words, you can create a bright atmosphere.
Do not forget to express your gratitude toward others through your words and actions.
By expressing gratitude, the other person will be happy, and you can build better relationships.
5 Communication Tips Based on Zen Teachings

1. Active Listening
Listen carefully to the end of what the other person is saying and strive to understand their feelings.
Also, be mindful of using backchanneling and nodding to show empathy and understanding toward the other person's words.
2. Questioning
Try asking questions to understand the other person's story more deeply.
By asking questions, the other person can organize their thoughts and feelings, which leads to smoother communication.
3. Affirmation
Avoid denying the other person's opinions or feelings, and start by affirming them first.
Also, it is important to show an attitude of respect even when their opinion differs from your own.
4. Non-verbal communication
Non-verbal communication such as facial expressions, eye contact, and gestures is just as important as words.
By making an effort to look the other person in the eye, interact with a smile, and speak in a calm tone, you can convey your sincerity and build a relationship of trust.
5. Silence
In Zen, silence is also considered an important form of communication.
Instead of forcing yourself to keep talking, it is sometimes important to maintain silence and wait for the other person's words.
In silence, you can organize your own feelings and those of the other person.
