Moon-Viewing Barber #WeeklyShortShortNote
A bonfire burns, and a bamboo flute resonates with a clear, limpid tone. Tatami mats are laid out in a square on the garden's gravel. A man sits in a chair in the center. The man's upper body is covered in a white cloth. Soon, a man in hakama appears. It is Shuji, the legendary barber. Shuji holds his scissors up to the full moon and begins to slowly cut the man's hair.
In the tatami room facing the garden, the invited guests watch Shuji's beautiful, efficient movements with bated breath. When Shuji's hands finally stop, an assistant who appeared from the side whips off the white cloth covering the man. The sound of wooden clappers rings out—clack!—and Shuji shouts, "Today's cut, titled 'Howling at the Moon,' is complete!" The guests' applause fills the air...
After the show, the banquet ends, and Shuji gazes at the moon in the room where the guests have departed. "It was magnificent again tonight," he says, nodding deeply at his assistant's words. "Master, the full moon event, 'Moon-Viewing Barber,' has concluded safely. Next is November."
"Indeed. I must start thinking about the design right away. Let's match it to the deepening autumn. I shall call it 'Autumn Leaf Trimming.'"
