What are you talking about── Paradigm Shift (Part 132) What was the '1 Billion Year Button' anyway? (ep1)
The future of time compression⌛️
The '1 Billion Year Button'
Are you familiar with this thought experiment?
The premise is simple.
If you press the button, you receive
1 million yen.
However, in exchange,
you must spend
1 billion years alone in a completely empty, white space.
You don't need to eat or sleep, and you cannot die.
Only time passes.
And when the 1 billion years are over, all those memories are erased.
Before you know it, you are back at the moment you pressed the button.
In the real world, not a single moment has passed.
The people around you haven't changed either.
It is still the year 2026.
Only the 1 million yen remains in your hand.
So, would you press it?
......
At first, I thought it was just a story about
'I'll press it.'
'I won't press it.'
.
However,
the more I think about it,
what bothered me wasn't the button,
timeitself.
──Humanity has long,
poured its passion into,
shortening time.
Walking became cycling,
cycling became driving,
then flying,
and then the internet.
And now,
AI is,
even starting to shorten,
the time it takes to read information.
Books are summarized,
meetings are automatically transcribed,
and videos are watched at double speed.
Before we knew it, we were
"how to compress time"
living in an era where we compete over that.
──If in the future,
not just knowledge,
but experience itself
could be compressed.
Ten years of training finished in an hour.
Foreign languages mastered in minutes.
A world where you can,
download life experiences themselves.
If such a future arrives,
would we,
still want to take the time?
──Come to think of it,
Life is not about
how fast you lived.
It is not.
It might be about
how deeply you savored it.
AI can
compress information.
But,
can it even compress emotions?
Even silence.
Even detours.
Even the casual afternoons
spent with someone.
──Perhaps,
the 1-billion-year button is not a thought experiment for receiving 1 million yen.
Nor is it a story that predicted future technology.
What is time?
That question,
might have been a story meant to pose it to us.
……What kind of button is it?🔘⌛️
