4 Lessons Learned from Traveling with a Child
The other day, I went on my first trip with my one-year-old son. While it was fun, there were certainly many challenges as well. Haha.
So, I'd like to write down what I noticed, partly as a reminder for myself.
1. When traveling with a child, having plenty of time is essential!
In conclusion, this is what it all comes down to. Haha.
By the way, how much extra time do you all allow for when planning a trip with a child?
Since it was my first time, I had no idea what to expect, so I just planned the schedule as I usually would, thinking, 'Well, it should be fine.'
However, reality is harsh.
First, on the Shinkansen ride there, his diaper leaked, and we had to start by changing his entire outfit! Haha.
Then, on the Shinkansen ride back, we couldn't get on the elevator, leading to unexpected mishaps like having to carry a mountain of luggage up the stairs.
At that moment, a stylish lady passing by helped carry the suitcase my wife was holding, and we managed to get through it safely. 😂
If she hadn't helped us, we might have missed our train...
My wife and I vowed that if we ever see a parent and child in that situation, we will be the ones to help them.
2. Be fully prepared. But assume the unexpected will happen.
Before the trip, I thought I had everything ready—clothes, diapers, formula, and all the necessities.
However, once we were actually traveling, the troubles mentioned above meant that what we had prepared ran out quickly. 😭
In the end, it turned into a hectic trip where we had to hand-wash clothes at the hotel and rush to a nearby drugstore. Haha.
3. The child is the top priority! If the parents can enjoy it too, that's a bonus.
The purpose of the trip is to create fun memories for the child. If the parents can enjoy it too, that's great, but I felt it's better to think of the child as the main character.
If you think that way, even if things don't go according to plan, you won't get frustrated and can fully enjoy the time spent with your child!
4. I want to learn to enjoy the troubles!
At first, I did feel stressed when things didn't go according to plan.
However, as you gradually get used to it, I think you'll start to enjoy even the troubles as part of the experience!
Surely, those troubles will become good stories to tell later, won't they?
Summary
Traveling with children is a valuable experience for parents as well. I felt that even if things don't go as planned, as long as you can enjoy the time spent with your children, that's enough. 😆
I hope this will be helpful for those planning to travel with their children.
