Golden Unique (Ballet Short Short)

For the recital, Ai was grouped with two others of the same age. The piece was from The Sleeping Beauty; Ai was cast as the Golden Fairy, and her best friend Mai as the Silver Fairy. The third person was cast as the Sapphire Fairy, but she sprained her ankle right before the performance and could not participate. There was no understudy, and no one else knew the choreography. The teacher then selected someone from the adult ballet class who had danced it before. Ai thought it was reckless, but figured it was better than leaving a hole in the performance.

As expected, the substitute forgot all the choreography and stood there like a statue. Her face was stiff. Ai and Mai were used to competitions and had stage presence. Mai immediately linked arms with her and struck a pose with a smile so it wouldn't look unnatural. As the Golden Fairy, Ai danced around them with playful choreography. Laughter and applause followed. Eventually, the Sapphire Fairy's tension melted away, and she began to move her limbs. In the end, they were all able to dance together.

Ai thought she would be scolded by the teacher for changing the choreography, but she was praised along with the others.
"You are a genius to be able to adapt the Golden Fairy so uniquely," she was told.
