Collection of Typos (Short-Short Story)
We're having a pop quiz today. Write down the words I'm about to read in kanji.
There are 10 questions, here we go!
Mr. Shinagawa handed out long, narrow sheets of paper with only the numbers 1 through 10 printed on them. Tomoya braced himself. He was worried about mishearing the words. He gripped his pencil.
Number 1, shimi -> stain
Number 2, hocho -> kitchen knife
Number 3, shiko -> thought
Number 4, suzume -> sparrow
Number 5, mokei -> model
Number 6, shaka -> Buddha
Number 7, kontei -> foundation
Number 8, ikai -> rank
Number 9, fundo -> counterweight
Number 10, ochiba -> fallen leaves
However, when he checked his answers with the kid sitting next to him, he got a zero. His friend laughed.
"Tomoya, you're an idiot. It's plain, principal, airplane, advance, clock, fish, stability, except, exercise, and position."
As he looked down, the teacher stared at Tomoya's answer sheet and said, "You managed to write 'Buddha'? I'll give you 100 points."
Voices cried out, "That's unfair," but the teacher calmed everyone down with a steady voice.
"He wrote the correct answers for everything he heard, so they are correct," he insisted. The answer sheet, now corrected to 100 points, looked blurry.
