A Harmless Essay Diary for Wednesday, October 22, 2025 (A story about how something I wrote was edited by AI without my permission)

I upload a new essay every day only in October each year.

I had a meal at a certain famous restaurant. There was a QR code on the counter table, and it said that if I wrote and posted a review from there, I would get a free dessert ice cream on the spot. The lunch set was surprisingly delicious, so I decided I wouldn't mind writing one. By the way, I don't use sites like Tabelog, and the closest I've come to a food blog was doing a little bit on the old Cookpad blog.

When I jumped to the review page from the QR code, it turned into a survey page.
How many times have you been to this restaurant?
Why did you choose it?
What were your thoughts on the meal?
How was the cleanliness, etc.?
There were quite a few questions, but since it was just checking boxes, it went quickly. Finally, there was a free-text field, so I just wrote that it was delicious and thank you for the meal. Then I called the staff and told them I had written it, but they said, 'Not yet. There is a page for entering your email address and such next.' I felt annoyed at that point, but I did it. Then, I was taken to a final confirmation page asking if this review was okay.

And then...

The review in the free-text field, where I had only written two sentences, had been 'converted into a long, long review.' The parts I had checked were made to look as if I had written them myself.

For the reason for choosing this restaurant, I had checked 'close to the station' and 'the reviews were good,' but

It felt like it wouldn't end even if I scrolled.I immediately realized that the AI had 'edited' it on its own, turning it into a long review as if the customer themselves had written all the advantages I had checked. Because of that, the good mood I had after the meal flew away and I felt unpleasant.

What the heck is this!!

Of course, I stopped the post. I don't need any ice cream. The fact that the meal was delicious also flew away. I just felt unpleasant. But I won't file a complaint. I won't post it on my blog either. Instead, as a creator, I cannot accept this at all, so I am writing it here.

If it is going to be edited by AI and posted as a long review, that is simply 'faked.' It was better that they at least made the customer do a final confirmation, but I wonder if there will be more instances in the future where this is done by AI without us knowing.
