Sunset in a Frame (Short Short)
I am a doctor working in Tokyo. Today is my birthday, and I had intended to leave work on time, but a major accident occurred, leading to a situation where ambulances were shuttling patients in one after another. I will likely be on duty through the night. I take a moment to slip away to the restroom. Through the hallway window, I felt the setting sun. A long night is about to begin. I let out an involuntary sigh and placed my hands on the window frame.
Looking up, I saw the mountains of my hometown.
?
That is the view I see from my room at my parents' house. Without a doubt. However, it should be at least eight hundred kilometers away from here. A familiar voice echoed in my heart.
"Happy 45th birthday. You are doing a great job working every day. We are always rooting for you, May-chan."
"Could it be, Great-Grandma?"
"Thank you for remembering me."
In an instant, it returned to the original, sterile view of high-rise buildings standing in rows. I hold my hands up to the window frame like a picture frame and smile.
"Even if it was a hallucination, it feels like I received a wonderful birthday present."
And then, with the setting sun on my back, I rush back to the emergency room.
