The issue of my 5th-grade daughter still taking baths with me
Lately, there is something I have been seriously worried about.
Well, actually, maybe I am not that worried. But if I don't pretend that I am, today's article won't work, so please just go along with the idea that I am worried.
My eldest daughter, who is in the 5th grade of elementary school, still takes baths with me like it's nothing. No, to be precise, the expression "takes baths with me" might be a little off. When I get in first, she comes in afterward with a completely natural look on her face. It's as if she believes without a doubt that the culture of "taking a bath with Daddy" will continue forever. But wait a minute. She is in the 5th grade. She is not a baby. She is not a kindergartner. She is a fairly mature elementary school student. She should be treated as an upper-grade student at school. She went mountain climbing with her school last week, and she is even serving as a vice-leader of her school commute group. A daughter of that age is still taking baths with her father. Is this really okay? Of course, it's not that my daughter dislikes it. It's actually the opposite. Just the other day, when I tried to take a bath by myself, she reacted like, "Wait, aren't we going together?" Why does it feel like I'm the one who didn't invite her? I don't get it. As for me, I am filled with the feeling of, "Wait, what about this situation?" However, she herself doesn't care at all. Once we get in the bath, she starts talking about school. About her friends. About school lunch. About the songs played during lunch. About the videos she's been into lately. Sometimes she talks the whole time, and sometimes she barely says a word. Yesterday, she started with "So today..." and didn't stop talking until we got out of the bath. What is this? Does she not have enough chances to talk at school? No, she talks about her friends often, so it's not like she doesn't have anyone to talk to. Just in case, I looked it up. I searched for "daughter father bath until when." Looking at the search history alone, I look like a pretty messed-up guy. I wish Google had a section where you could explain the circumstances. According to the search results, some families stop around the lower grades of elementary school, while others think it's normal until the upper grades. It seems there are even families where they still do it in junior high or high school. ...In other words, I didn't really find out anything. Even though I used the internet, I learned nothing. I felt the limitations of modern society. So, I asked my wife too. "Hey, is it normal for a 5th grader to still take baths together?" My wife said while watching a Korean drama on her smartphone, "I don't know if it's normal, but isn't it fine?" That was the end of it. Well, that's true. That is true, but I expected a conversation more like, "Yeah, it's about time, isn't it?" or "Actually, I was a little worried about it too." It felt as casual as deciding what to have for dinner at the supermarket. In the end, it seems I am the only one in our house who thinks this is a problem. My daughter doesn't care. My wife doesn't care. The black stray cat wandering around our neighborhood probably doesn't care either. I am the only one in the world who cares. I'm starting to feel like I'm the strange one. In the first place, if I think about it calmly, there is nothing actually wrong with the current situation. My daughter is talking happily. I am nodding along appropriately. The bath is properly heated. It is a peaceful bathroom, except for the fact that I am losing a bit too much hair. Even so, only the question of "how long will this last?" bothers me strangely. Humans are mysterious creatures. We put off truly important things and keep thinking seriously about things that don't matter. So, as of now, I haven't reached a conclusion. My 5th-grade daughter will probably come into the bath with me like normal today, too. And I will probably think, "Is this really okay?" I have been thinking the same thing for months now. I feel like I was thinking the same thing last year, too. If anyone knows the answer, please tell me. However, please don't give me the logical advice to ask my daughter herself. Because if she says, "Then I won't take baths with you anymore," it will all be over.
