Haiku Impressions Trilogy 2026 (1) Reading 'Spring Night Journey Home | Haiku'
Haiku Impressions
First of all, I thought it was a beautiful haiku.
Cherry blossoms in full bloom. And between them, the light of the stars. It is a scene that stimulates one's artistic sensibilities.
The combination of "cherry blossoms" and "stars" has a poetic sentiment and also an element of surprise. As far as I know, unless it is "night cherry blossoms," haiku using "cherry blossoms" usually bring to mind the appearance of the flowers in the brightness of the day.
In this haiku, the first five syllables evoke the image of oneself returning from work or school, the middle seven bring the blooming cherry blossoms to mind, and the final "spring stars" transform the "cherry blossoms" into a nighttime scene. The choice of seasonal words that make one imagine what kind of stars they are—perhaps the first star of the evening, or a constellation—is also wonderful.
Impressions after reading the commentary
"It made me think I'll do my best tomorrow" and "It is precisely because there is suffering that joy shines through"—I was particularly moved by these two points.
>It made me think I'll do my best tomorrow
I am also busy with my part-time job, so I can empathize with the "tired body" on the "way home." The slight sense of fulfillment from doing useful work and the physical fatigue from having worked—that is what the way home is all about.
The cherry blossoms and the stars twinkling beyond them must have touched your heart directly!
It makes you feel like you can keep going, doesn't it?
>It is precisely because there is suffering that joy shines through
If a part-time job were just simple, there would be no sense of being moved. Perhaps it is because we sometimes struggle that we feel happy when we receive our paycheck. Perhaps that is where the sense of reward or pride comes from.
Even if you felt bad about getting wet in the rain for the first time in a while, you can feel happy again by going to your favorite cafe on another day, walking at the mall, or reading a book that arrived from an online shop.
It is a haiku that gives you energy when you are a little tired, when something unpleasant happened, or when you have doubts. It warmed my heart.
