Eras and Lives
When I was a child, whenever I went to my grandparents' house, my mother and grandmother would often take me to Daimatsu to go shopping.
Daimatsu was a supermarket that stocked groceries. I remember the storefront being old and the interior feeling somewhat dim, though I suspect that might be a misremembering. At that time, there were no other such stores nearby, so we always went to Daimatsu for our shopping.
Across from Daimatsu was a goldfish shop. The shop was always open, with tiled tanks placed facing the street. While waiting for the pedestrian crossing signal, I would always gaze at the goldfish.
The first time I saw them, my mother and grandmother told me, "Look, there's a telescope goldfish." When I looked where they were pointing, among the red goldfish, there was a black one with bulging eyes. I see, so that's why it's called a telescope goldfish, I thought, satisfied. Ever since then, I would look only for the telescope goldfish, watching them while saying, "It's a telescope goldfish!"
A few years later, a Jusco was built even closer, and we stopped going to Daimatsu. Daimatsu soon closed down, and a bookstore was built in its place. Since it was originally a supermarket, the lot was large. It was relatively big for a town bookstore, and I used it often until junior high, but it disappeared during a period when I hadn't visited for a while.
By that time, the goldfish shop across the street had long since vanished as well.
About ten years ago, I did some goldfish scooping at a festival. My wife and I scooped up over ten of them, but after putting them in a tank, three died the next day. The day after that, another two died.
It feels terrible to let living things die. When I asked at a pet shop what I should do, they said it was likely a lack of oxygen, so I installed an air pump as instructed, and they stopped dying.
Instead of dying, they all started growing rapidly, and the tank soon became too small. If I left them like that, I was sure they would die from stress. Fortunately, my wife had a 90-centimeter tank from when she used to keep tropical fish, so we moved them into that. They finally settled down.
When I looked at them again, our goldfish were all red, sleek ones or ones with flowing fins. It felt a bit lacking, so at the next festival, I aimed only for black telescope goldfish, and after catching two, I released them into the tank while remembering the aforementioned Daimatsu.
When I looked the next day, both of them were dead.
