Tower of Babel
If I were to think about when in my life I used a juice vending machine the most, it must have been when I was nineteen and living in the Suzuki student dormitory.
There was a vending machine in front of the dormitory entrance, and I bought canned coffee or juice every day. There were two machines, one was DyDo and the other was Coca-Cola.
The DyDo one had a lottery, and since I bought from it every day, I won a few times. At first, I was quite moved, thinking, 'I won!', but I gradually got used to it and it became more like, 'Oh, a win. Sure, sure. Thanks.'
I think I drank the Golden Apple that became an urban legend from the Coca-Cola one, but the era seems different from what is discussed in the world. When I looked it up, I found that Green Apple was released in '91, so I'm probably mistaking it for that.
Empty cans were supposed to be taken to the trash collection space in the hallway. Combustible trash was to be put in the plastic bucket provided, and everything else was to be placed next to the bucket.
One time, I saw two or three empty cans stacked on top of each other in that trash space. Someone must have stacked them as a joke. That gave me an idea, so for a while, I didn't throw away my cans, but washed them and started saving them in my room.
Once I had saved up a certain amount, I connected them all with superglue, and they reached a height that touched the ceiling.
I intended to show them off to everyone before taking them out to the trash, but when I had them standing in my room, my senior, Imura-san, came over to hang out, bumped into them, and they fell over.
'Ah! Sorry. Wait, what is this?'
Imura-san pointed at the fallen cans, all connected together, and started grinning.
'Isn't it interesting? I'm going to connect them to the ceiling and take them out as trash. It's the Tower of Babel.'
'What a pointless thing to do.'
I showed the Tower of Babel to a few other people after that, but everyone just chuckled, saying things like 'That's stupid,' 'That's ridiculous,' or 'What are you doing?', and I didn't really get much of a reaction.
Eventually, I put it in the trash area in the middle of the night, and the next morning, the dorm mother took it apart and disposed of it.
