The Sound of FamilyMart, Beyond the Door

When you enter a FamilyMart, the same melody plays in every store, but that is not an original FamilyMart tune. The doorbell of the studio apartment I lived in during my student days was the same one.

Back then, whenever the doorbell rang unexpectedly, I was always annoyed. It was usually someone troublesome ringing it without an appointment.
It was fine when a telephone line salesperson came because I actually needed one, but when a futon salesperson came next, I ended up chatting with them for about thirty minutes.
When I opened the door and showed my face, they looked nostalgic and said, "Are you in a band? I used to be into heavy metal, too." Then they asked, "Instead of talking about futons, can we talk about music for a bit?" If it were now, I would refuse flatly, but as a naive young man, I didn't know how to handle it, so I let them in. I listened for a while to stories about how they went to Tokyo with their band and came back after failing miserably, and how hard it is to work as a futon salesperson.
The futon guy said he liked Randy Rhoads, but I preferred Zakk Wylde, so I couldn't really relate. I just wondered if this was the inevitable end for a heavy metal fan, and if I would end up like that too.

One time, the doorbell rang again, and I ignored it because it was a hassle. Since it would be rude to make it obvious I was pretending to be out, I turned down the TV volume and held my breath.
The place I lived in at the time had only a single door separating the room from the outside, so I was quite nervous during times like this.
The doorbell rang three times in total, but I kept up the act of not being home. When I went out later, a piece of paper with "Are you home, you idiot?" written on it was tucked into the door.
That's how I knew my ruse had been discovered, but I never found out who had come or what they wanted.
