Statistics and information on the worldwide supply of, demand for, and flow of the mineral commodity perlite

Perlite is a naturally occurring amorphous volcanic glass that contains between 2 and 5% water. When rapidly heated, the contained water vaporizes, causing the ore to expand up to 20 times its original volume into a lightweight, porous material. Expanded perlite’s low density and porous structure, as well as its durability, fire resistance, inertness, low acoustical and thermal conductivity, and water retention capacity make it useful for a wide range of applications.
