The AI Stack Is Evolving: Meet the Models Behind the Scenes
When most people think of AI, they think of ChatGPT or Midjourney or Claude or some other tool that generates human-like responses from a text box. In other words, they think of LLMs — Large Language Models.
And while LLMs have driven much of the recent buzz in Generative AI, they are just one piece of a rapidly diversifying model ecosystem. In fact, there are at least seven other types of specialized AI models that play critical roles in how modern AI systems work. These models aren’t just sidekicks to LLMs , they are purpose-built engines designed to handle tasks that LLMs alone aren’t optimized for.
So if you’re building AI-powered products, or simply trying to understand where things are headed, it’s time to go beyond the LLM.

Why Specialized Models Matter
AI systems today aren’t monoliths. They’re increasingly modular and task-specific, optimized for constraints like:
- Latency and size: Can it run on-device or in real-time?
- Multimodality: Can it understand both text and images?
- Actionability: Can it plan, decide, and interact with tools?
- Precision: Can it segment an image down to the pixel?
LLMs are powerful, but not always the best fit for these needs. That’s where these specialized…
