From Proto-Somaloid *ʕáùs, from Proto-East Cushitic *ʕawš-/*ʕayš- (“grass”). Compare also cawl.

Cognate with Maay ees, Garre aas, Tunni ees, Rendille h'os, Jiiddu is, Daasanach iish, Saho cashsho, Afar qayso, Sidamo hayisso, Tsamai ʕaš (“corn”) and possibly Oromo ees (“oat”).
