The Gardening Portal

Introduction

Gardening is the process of growing plants for their vegetables, fruits, flowers, herbs, or ornamental purposes within a designated space. Gardens fulfill a wide assortment of purposes, notably the production of aesthetically pleasing areas, medicines, cosmetics, dyes, foods, poisons, wildlife habitats, and saleable goods (see market gardening). People often partake in gardening for its therapeutic, health, educational, cultural, philosophical, environmental, and religious benefits.

Gardening varies in scale from the 800 hectare Versailles gardens down to container gardens grown inside. Gardens take many forms; some only contain one type of plant, while others involve a complex assortment of plants with no particular order. (Full article...)

Horticulture (from Latin: horti + culture) is the science and art of growing fruits, vegetables, flowers, or ornamental plants. Horticulture is distinct from conventional plant agriculture through its emphasis on the artistic and landscaped expressions of plant cultivation, in addition to various crops being grown in scientifically informed controlled environments such as greenhouse and intensive outdoor systems unlike industrial large-scale agronomic systems and field mechanization. There are various divisions of horticulture because plants are grown for a variety of purposes. These divisions include, but are not limited to: propagation, arboriculture, landscaping, floriculture and turf maintenance. For each of these, there are various professions, aspects, tools used and associated challenges—each requiring highly specialized skills and knowledge on the part of the horticulturist. Richard Reames in 2016

Richard C. Reames (born September 20, 1957) is an American artist, arborsculptor, nurseryman, writer, and public speaker. He lives and works in Williams, Oregon.

Reames coined the word "arborsculpture" to describe the art of shaping living tree trunks and woody plants into sculptural forms, furniture and shelters. His writing and artistic practice are grounded in ecological principles of living in harmony with nature and with creating living structures from trees. He has written two books on arborsculpture and tree shaping. (Full article...)

Center pivot irrigation

Satellite image of circular crop fields, characteristic of center pivot irrigation, in Haskell County, Kansas in late June 2001. Healthy, growing crops are green. Corn would be growing into leafy stalks by then. Sorghum, which resembles corn, grows more slowly and would be much smaller and therefore, possibly paler. Wheat is a brilliant gold as harvest occurs in June. Fields of brown have been recently harvested and plowed under or lie fallow for the year. U.S. Route 56 crosses the scene, passing the cities of Sublette (lower left) and Copeland (upper right).
