Salesforce has confirmed it is stepping back from active development of Heroku, creating a turning point for one of the cloud industry’s most influential platform-as-a-service offerings. While the company insists the service remains fully supported, the decision to halt new feature development and stop selling enterprise contracts to new customers indicates a broader strategic shift toward AI products.
In a blog post, Nitin T. Bhat, who oversees Heroku within Salesforce, said the platform is moving into what he described as a “sustaining engineering” phase. Under this model, Salesforce will focus on operational stability and reliability, rather than expanding Heroku’s feature set. Existing customers can continue to use the service, renew subscriptions, and receive support, but, and here’s the big change: enterprise-level agreements will no longer be offered to new buyers.
Industry observers were quick to interpret the announcement as more than a routine product adjustment. In the tech world, “sustaining engineering” often signals the start of a managed decline, even if no shutdown date is set. Historically, similar moves across the industry have preceded deeper consolidation or eventual retirement once customer migration is underway.
A Longtime Dev Resource
Heroku has earned a distinctive place in the developer ecosystem. Founded in 2007 and acquired by Salesforce in 2010, the platform gained popularity by dramatically simplifying application deployment. Developers could push code with minimal configuration and scale applications without managing infrastructure.
For many developers and IT pros, Heroku represented an early vision of cloud abstraction that predated Docker and modern container orchestration.
Over time, Salesforce expanded Heroku beyond its Ruby roots, adding support for multiple programming languages and a suite of managed services. Among the most widely used was Heroku Postgres, which automated database management and backups while supporting modern workloads, including newer AI-related extensions such as vector storage.
New Competition
Despite those enhancements, Heroku increasingly found itself competing with both hyperscale cloud providers and Salesforce’s own growing portfolio. Public cloud platforms now offer mature platform services that overlap with Heroku’s core capabilities. Internally, Salesforce has been investing heavily in AI-centric offerings, particularly tools designed to build and deploy enterprise-grade AI agents.
Bhat’s post framed the decision as a matter of focus. Salesforce, he wrote, is concentrating its product and engineering resources on areas with the highest long-term return, especially secure and trusted AI development. That emphasis has raised questions about whether maintaining multiple application platforms still makes sense inside the company.
Developers have reacted with a mix of disappointment and pragmatism. Heroku has been widely praised for its simplicity and developer experience, attributes that many feel remain unmatched by newer alternatives. At the same time, some critics argue that rising costs and slower innovation had already eroded its appeal, pushing teams to evaluate other hosting options well before Salesforce’s latest announcement.
For Salesforce, the shift reflects a company increasingly defined by AI-driven platforms rather than developer tooling. For Heroku’s loyal user base, this shift is the end of an era in which the platform helped shape modern cloud development. Whether Heroku remains a stable service or gradually fades from relevance will depend largely on how quickly customers decide to move on, and how aggressively Salesforce continues its AI-first push.
