How do I turn off Gemini in Gmail and Workspace?
In Gmail, Docs, and the other Workspace apps, Gemini appears as a side panel and a “Help me write” option. To switch it off on a personal account, open the app’s Settings, look for the Gemini or smart features option, and turn it off. That hides the side panel and the AI buttons. On a work or school account, your organization’s admin controls whether Gemini is available, so the toggle may be greyed out and you would need to ask your IT team.
How do I turn off Gemini on Android?
On many phones, Gemini replaced Google Assistant as the default assistant. To go back, open the Gemini app, go to your profile and Settings, and look for the option to switch your digital assistant back to Google Assistant. You can also disable or uninstall the Gemini app like any other app. After switching, holding the home button or saying the wake phrase brings back Assistant instead of Gemini.

Can I remove Gemini completely?
On a personal account, mostly yes. You can turn it off in Workspace apps, swap back to Assistant on Android, hide it in Chrome, and avoid it in Search, which removes it from the places you actually see it. On a managed work device, full removal is up to your IT admin. Either way, turning Gemini off is reversible, so you are not making a permanent change.

Will turning off Gemini delete my Google data?
No. Switching Gemini off only removes the AI features. Your Gmail, Drive files, photos, and account stay exactly as they are. You can also clear your Gemini activity separately if you want.
Can I get Google Assistant back after switching to Gemini?
Yes. In the Gemini app settings on Android you can switch your digital assistant back to Google Assistant. Availability can vary by phone and region as Google transitions between them.
Why does Gemini keep coming back after updates?
