What is Inflection AI?
Inflection AI is a consumer AI company founded in 2022 by Mustafa Suleyman (co-founder of DeepMind), Reid Hoffman (LinkedIn co-founder), and Karén Simonyan. Its flagship product Pi (“Personal Intelligence”) at pi.ai was designed to be a supportive, emotionally-intelligent AI conversation partner rather than a task-focused assistant like ChatGPT.
Pi launched in May 2023 with a distinctive friendly tone, real-time voice mode, and a deliberate focus on emotional support rather than maximum capability. It was one of the early consumer AI products to emphasize the assistant’s personality.
Why does Inflection AI matter?
Inflection’s main place in AI history is the unusual deal it made with Microsoft in March 2024: Suleyman and most of Inflection’s engineering team moved to Microsoft to lead a new consumer AI division. Microsoft paid roughly $650 million for a non-exclusive license to Inflection’s technology, leaving the company a shell with its IP licensed but its team gone.
The arrangement was widely seen as a workaround for traditional acquisition (which would have triggered antitrust scrutiny). It signaled how aggressively Microsoft was competing for top AI talent and previewed similar deals (e.g., Google’s $2.7B agreement with Character AI’s founders later in 2024).
How do you use Inflection AI?
Pi is still operational at pi.ai with a free web app and iOS/Android apps. It can chat, hold voice conversations, and remember context across sessions. The product hasn’t received major model upgrades since the team moved to Microsoft, so its capability ceiling is below current ChatGPT/Claude/Gemini.
For Suleyman’s current work: he leads Microsoft AI, the consumer division responsible for Microsoft Copilot and Bing integrations. The Inflection name continues to exist as a corporate shell offering enterprise AI services, but it’s no longer a consumer-AI competitor.
