What is Claude for Chrome?

What it is: Claude for Chrome is a browser extension that lets Claude read and click the website you’re on.
Who it’s for: Anyone who wants Claude to help with web tasks — forms, tabs, research — without leaving their browser
Best if: You live inside Chrome and want Claude in a side panel
Skip if: You don’t use Chrome, or you don’t want Claude inside your browser

Claude for Chrome is a Chrome browser extension from Anthropic. It puts Claude in a side panel of your browser, and the key thing it adds is this: that Claude can see and act on whatever website you’re currently on. It can click buttons, fill forms, extract data, and summarize pages — on the real tab you have open.

Think of it as Claude looking over your shoulder at your browser, able to take action on whatever is in front of you.

What it’s good for

• "Summarize these 5 tabs I have open."
• "Fill out this form with my details."
• "Find the pricing on each of these competitor sites."
• "Book this flight for me" — with your oversight; Claude asks before acting.

What it can’t do

• Can’t leave Chrome. It only knows about the browser. It can’t touch files on your computer or your other apps.
• Only works in Chrome. Not Safari, not Firefox.
• Needs a paid plan. Claude Pro ($20/month) at minimum — no free tier.
• Still in research preview. Works on most sites; some complex pages (logged-in dashboards, heavy JavaScript) can trip it up.

How it differs from Cowork and Claude Code

All three can "use a browser," but they do it differently:

• Claude for Chrome — clicks the tab you’re on. Uses your logins.
• Cowork (desktop app) — clicks your real browser and can touch your files and other apps.
• Claude Code + Playwright — spins up a clean, scriptable browser; best for automations you want to run repeatedly.

How to get it

Install the extension from the Chrome Web Store (search "Claude for Chrome"). Sign in with your Claude Pro or Max account. The side panel opens from Chrome’s extensions bar.
