What is a Plugin (in AI)?

What it is: A plugin is a small add-on that gives an AI a new skill. Think of it like adding a new app to your phone.
Who it’s for: Anyone installing their first Claude Code or ChatGPT plugin
Best if: You want to know what plugins do and whether to use them
Skip if: You already build plugins

An AI plugin is like an extra tool you plug into the AI. The AI by itself can write and answer questions. A plugin gives it a new skill.

Think of it like a Swiss Army knife. The knife starts with a blade. Then you add a screwdriver, scissors, and a toothpick. Each one is a plugin.

What plugins do

  • Give the AI more knowledge. A research plugin can pull from a specific library of books.
  • Give the AI new tools. A file-reading plugin lets the AI open your PDFs.
  • Give the AI new actions. A calendar plugin lets the AI book meetings for you.
  • Give the AI a focus. A “44% Rule” plugin makes it audit your business for AI gaps.

Where to find plugins

  • Claude Code plugins — work inside the Claude Code app. Example: The 44% Rule plugin.
  • ChatGPT Custom GPTs — mini-apps built on top of ChatGPT.
  • MCP servers — a new standard that works with many AI tools. Learn about MCP.

Plugins are how AI becomes more useful for your specific job. A doctor might use medical plugins. A writer might use grammar plugins. A small business owner might use an automation plugin.
