What it is: The average value over the last N periods, recalculated each period.
Who it is for: Anyone reading a price chart or a trend indicator for the first time.
Best if: You want to see direction without the day-to-day noise.
Skip if: You need to know what happens next. It only describes the past. Want one practical AI workflow every morning? Subscribe to our free daily newsletter.
What is a moving average?
Add up the last 50 closing prices, divide by 50, and plot the result. Do that again tomorrow with the newest 50. The line that traces out is a 50-day moving average.
Longer averages are smoother and slower. Shorter ones react faster and wobble more.
Why does it matter?
It turns a jagged price line into something you can read direction from. Many trend rules are built on the order of several averages, for example price above the 50-day, the 50-day above the 150-day, and the 150-day above the 200-day.
That ordering is a quick way to describe a stock in a sustained uptrend without judging anything by eye.
What it cannot do
A moving average always lags, because it is made of past prices by definition. It confirms a move that has already begun rather than predicting one.
In a sideways market the lines cross back and forth constantly, producing signals that go nowhere.
