Part four of a series, for the people raising and teaching the next generation of readers.
The earlier pieces in this series made an argument, showed the evidence, and offered a practical playbook for adults. This one is about the people with the most at stake and the least say in it: children who are still building the very skills the rest of the series is about. If you are a parent or a teacher, you have more influence over this than almost anyone, and you do not need to panic to use it.
Should parents actually worry about this?
Concern, yes. Panic, no. The reason to pay attention is that childhood is when the reading brain gets built. As the first piece covered, reading is not something we are born able to do. Each child constructs the wiring for it over years, and the early years carry most of the load. The data piece showed where that is heading: 70% of American fourth graders now read below proficient. So the stakes are real. But a skill that is built can be built well, and the people closest to the child have the biggest hand in it.
Why does reading in childhood matter so much?
Because the foundation is laid earlier than most people realize, and the gaps open early too. An Ohio State study put numbers on it. Children whose parents read them five books a day enter kindergarten having heard about 1.4 million more words than children who were not read to at all. Even one book a day adds up to roughly 290,000 more words by age five. Those words become vocabulary, and vocabulary becomes the ability to read fluently later. The years before a child can read independently are not a waiting room. They are where the groundwork happens.
You are not keeping your kids from AI. You are making sure they can master it instead of needing it.
Is AI good or bad for kids’ learning?
It can be either, and the difference is the same one the rest of this series turns on: scaffold versus substitute. As a scaffold, AI can be wonderful for a child. It can read a story aloud, explain a hard word, give a struggling or dyslexic reader patient one-on-one help that a busy classroom cannot. Used that way it supports the learning. The trouble starts when it does the learning instead: writing the book report, answering the questions, summarizing the chapter the child was supposed to read. That is when a tool meant to help becomes a way to skip the work that builds the skill. What about phones and screens?
This is where the attention research from the data piece meets daily parenting. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no screens before about 18 months apart from video chat, and about an hour a day of high-quality content for ages two to five. Its newer guidance leans less on a strict clock and more on quality, conversation, and a family media plan you actually agree on together.
On phones specifically, the social psychologist Jonathan Haidt argues in The Anxious Generation that childhood shifted from play-based to phone-based around the early 2010s, and proposes four norms: no smartphone before roughly age 14, no social media before 16, phone-free schools, and far more real-world play and independence. His causal claims are debated, but the norms are spreading fast, and they line up with what the attention research would predict. A child cannot build sustained reading on a device engineered to interrupt every 47 seconds.
What can parents do, starting this week?
The moves are simple, and they work at every age. Here is the shape of it, then a starter kit if you only want three.

If you do only three things
- Read aloud daily, for as many years as they will let you. It is the highest-return habit here.
- Delay the smartphone, and put your own down while you are at it. Kids copy what you do, not what you say.
- Make AI a tutor, not a crutch: let it quiz and explain, never let it do the assignment.
What can teachers do with AI in the classroom?
Teachers are carrying the heaviest version of this, often with the least support, so the goal is the highest-impact moves, not more work. A few moves that hold up: bring back whole texts and protect time for reading them in class, where the phone is not in the way. Lean on assignments AI cannot complete for a student, such as handwritten in-class work, oral explanations, and revisions of a student’s own earlier draft. And put AI to work on the parts where it helps: generating practice questions and quizzes so students retrieve what they read, which the learning research shows beats rereading by a wide margin. The aim is not to ban the tool but to teach students the same scaffold-versus-substitute judgment the habits piece lays out for adults.
What if my kid already leans on AI for everything?
Then you start where they are, and you do not need a confrontation. A skill that has gone soft is not a skill that is gone. The same fix that works for adults works for kids: change the order. Do the thinking first, then let AI check it. Read the chapter, then let the app quiz you on it. Write the rough answer, then ask for feedback. Pick one subject or one habit and make it the norm, then add another. The trend is not a destiny, for them any more than for you, and the window for building these skills stays open longer than the worry suggests.

Common questions
At what age should I give my child a smartphone?
Later than the pressure around you suggests. One widely shared guideline holds off on a smartphone until about 14 and social media until 16, with a basic call-and-text phone in between. The exact age is yours to decide, but the research leans toward waiting, and a delayed phone is far easier than a clawed-back one.
Are AI reading apps okay for my kid?
Many are helpful, with one test: does the app help your child read, or read for them? An app that listens to them sound out words, or explains a word they ask about, is a scaffold. One that hands over the summary so they can skip the book is a substitute. Same category of tool, opposite effect.
Is it hypocritical to limit screens while I’m always on mine?
Children learn far more from what you model than what you mandate. You do not have to be perfect, but reading your own book in front of them, and putting the phone in another room during family time, teaches more than any rule. The read-aloud habit doubles as your own screen break.
My school uses AI heavily. Should I push back?
Ask one question first: is the AI used to help students practice and get feedback, or to replace the reading and writing themselves? The first is a fair use of a good tool. The second is worth a respectful conversation with the teacher or school.
