【著者の言葉】
とうとう私は、北海道から九州までの「最長片道切符」の旅をすることに決めた。同じ駅を二度通らなければどんなに遠回りであっても片道切符になるわけで、そういう片道切符の最長のものを算出して実際に乗ってみようと思ったのである。
これはルートが一本に確定してしまうから制約はむしろ強すぎるが、一日ずつの行程の区切り方と列車の時刻との組合せには適度の自由が残されている。距離も一万三千キロぐらいになるはずだから国鉄全線の三分の二ぐらいには乗れるわけで、これも、思う存分に乗りたい人間にとっては適度である。(本書「遠回りの旅」)

宮脇俊三(1926-2003)
埼玉県に生れる。東京大学西洋史学科卒業後、中央公論社に入社。「日本の歴史」「世界の歴史」シリーズ、中公新書の創刊等を手掛ける。出版部長、中央公論編集長等を経て、1978年退社。同年刊行の国鉄全線完乗記『時刻表2万キロ』で日本ノンフィクション賞を受賞する。『最長片道切符の旅』『時刻表昭和史』『中国火車旅行』等で文芸の一ジャンルとしての鉄道紀行文学を確立した。『古代史紀行』等の歴史紀行、泉鏡花文学賞を受けた小説集『殺意の風景』がある。1999年、菊池寛賞を受賞。『宮脇俊三鉄道紀行全集』全6巻(角川書店)がある。

    文庫本で２冊目　内容は時刻表を使っての一筆書きの古典的名著　何回も読んで本がゆるくなり買い替えです。新しい本は定価が高くなりました。

    数多くの路線が消えて自分なりきの検索に利用も出来ています。全国は出かけることが出来ませんでしたが、所々に乗車出来ているところもあり懐かしさが加わりました。

    宿泊するたびに項目が変わり　路線図も大きくなって読みやすく見やすくなっています。余分な出費にはなってしまいましたが満足しています。

    一筆書きで行く国鉄最長路線の旅は、今やかなわず　12000kmのNHKBSの旅と変わってしまった

    車内の人の様子、窓外の景色の移り変わりの描写は、実際に列車に載っているかのように感じられて良い

    今すぐにでも、あてのない旅に出かけたいものだという思いにさせられる

    一筆書きといっても、宿泊の都合上、盲腸線の最終駅に止まらざるを得ないこともあるし

    実質的に同じ駅を利用することもありうる

    厳密にいえばそういうことはせずに、路線を乗り継いでいくべきではと文句も言いたくなることもある

    しかし、旅の最終目的が13319km先の駅のみであるというのは単純すぎて素敵である

    本件の旅行は1978年秋に実施されたものであるから、もう40年近く前のこととなる。その後10年を経ずして国鉄はJRに移行したが、国鉄解体に向かう時代の陰と陽を旅行者の目として見た記録は貴重ではある。

    その旅行時期の前半には、プロ野球では阪急とヤクルトの日本シリーズが行われていた。「国鉄」スワローズファンの著者は、感慨を込めてヤクルトは「国鉄黄昏の時代に狂い咲きのように日本シリーズに登場して」といった記述をしている。現在では、阪急という球団の存在を知る人も少なくなったかも知れない。その日本シリーズでは、阪急、上田監督による、一球のファウルかホームランかを巡る79分の猛抗議が行われ、結果的にはヤクルトが制したわけであるが、本文中には結果は記されていない。初版が刊行された1979年ならば、その時点の多くの読者には記憶も新たな事象には違いなく、そこまで記さないことが「ブンガク」なのかも知れないが、後世に読まれることも想起すれば、顛末を記しても良かったのではないか、と今読み直して感じる。

    著者の死後刊行された「取材メモ」には、上田監督の猛抗議に触れた一項はあるが、蛇の足が大好きな某教授の補注にもそれに関する顛末には触れず仕舞いである。

    欧州諸国の鉄道では、乗車券の有効期限がその列車限りとか、当日限り、或いは数日という国が増えている状況で、こうした旅行が行われるに至った制度も昔話となる日も案外近いかも知れない。
