    科学って難しそう。

    エンジニアであり、理系の私でも宇宙や火星と聞くと、なんだか壮大すぎて、自分とは遠い世界の話のように感じてしまいます。

    でも、この小説を読み終えたあとに思ったのは、科学とは決して一部の天才だけのものではない、ということでした。

    伊与原さんは、もともと研究の世界にいた作家。

    だからこそ、科学の面白さだけでなく、実験が思い通りにいかないもどかしさ、手を動かしてみて初めてわかる発見、そして何かに夢中になる人間の美しさを、ここまでリアルに描けるのだと思います。

    物語の舞台は、定時制高校。

    そこに通う生徒たちは、それぞれに事情を抱えている。

    年齢も、境遇も、歩んできた人生も違う。

    そんな彼らが、理科教師の藤竹と出会い、科学部で「火星のクレーター」を再現する実験に挑んでいく。

    最初から全員が前向きなわけではありませんでした。

    時には協力し、時にはぶつかり、すれ違いながらも、彼らは一つの目標に向かって進んでいく。

    夜の教室で、火星を目指す。

    この設定だけで、もう胸が熱くなります。

    「何かに夢中になる姿は、年齢も境遇も超えて、人を輝かせる」

    主人公は藤竹かもしれません。

    けれど、物語の中心で輝いているのは、岳人たち定時制高校の生徒たちでした。

    彼らは、誰かに用意された正解をなぞるのではなく、自分たちの手で未知の世界を切り拓いていきます。

    失敗する。

    悩む。

    ぶつかる。

    それでも、もう一度やってみる。

    その姿が、とても美しいのです。

    特に印象に残ったのは、岳人の台詞。

    「俺はただ、俺たちの実験を続けたい」

    この言葉には、ものすごい力がありました。

    誰かのためでも、評価されるためでも、先生の期待に応えるためでもない。

    自分たちがやりたいから続ける。

    自分たちの装置で、クレーターを作りたい。

    そのまっすぐな思いに、胸を打たれました。

    もう一つ心に残ったのは、藤竹の

    「どんな人間も、その気にさえなれば、必ず何かを生み出せる」

    という言葉。

    教師としての理想でもあり、科学者としての仮説でもある。

    この言葉に対して佳純が異議を唱える場面も、とてもよかったです。

    人を信じることと、実験することは同じではない。

    その鋭い指摘によって、藤竹という人物の危うさや、人を導くことの難しさも浮かび上がる。

    この作品は、単なる感動物語では終わりません。

    科学部の生徒たちが成長するだけでなく、教師である藤竹自身もまた、彼らから学んでいく物語になっている。

    人を信じることは美しい。

    しかし人を導くことには責任も伴います。

    その難しさを、この作品はきれいごとにせず描いている。

    夢中になるのに遅すぎることはない。

    学生だからできる。

    若いから挑戦できる。

    才能があるから続けられる。

    そんなふうに思いがちですが、本当はそうではないのかもしれません。

    何かを好きになること。

    知りたいと思うこと。

    試してみたいと思うこと。

    その気持ちが芽生えた瞬間から、人は何かを始められる。

    科学とは、難しい数式や専門用語のことだけではなく、「なぜだろう？」と思う心から始まるものなのだと感じました。

    そして、この作品を書き切った伊与原新さんへのリスペクトも強く残りました。

    実験途中のトラブルは、机の上だけで考えていても描けません。

    モデルがあるとはいえ、科学のリアリティと小説としての熱量を両立させるのは、簡単なことではないはず。

    それを、読者が物語として夢中になれる形に仕上げている。

    まさに、研究を知る作家だからこそ生み出せた小説だと思います。

    この本は、科学って難しそうで苦手だと思っている人にこそ読んでほしいです。

    宇宙やSFに興味はあるけれど、専門的すぎる話は少し不安。

    そんな人にも、安心して薦められます。

    難しい知識がなくても大丈夫。

    必要なのは、何かに夢中になる人を応援したい気持ちだけ。

    夜の教室で、火星を目指す生徒たち。

    その姿を見ているうちに、きっと自分の中にも眠っていた「やってみたい」という気持ちが、そっと顔を出すはずです。

    『宙わたる教室』は、科学小説であり、青春小説であり、そして何歳からでも人は何かを生み出せるのだと教えてくれる物語です。

    NHKのドラマが始まった頃原作を読もうと文庫本を探したけれど、無くて単行本を買って読みましたとても読みやすくドラマの内容もよく理解できてあっという間に読み終えました。そこで文庫本が出たので蔵書に加える為に購入しました。

    伊与原作品といえば、地学を中心に化学の知識をふんだんに散りばめた物語。

    今回も定時制高校の科学部のお話です。

    実際にある定時制高校の科学部から着想を得たということですが、割と攻めたストーリーになっているなぁと思う。

    定時制高校のリアルもしっかりと描かれながらも、化学の楽しさもちゃんと描かれていて素敵な作品に出逢った。

    章ごとにそれぞれの登場人物を主人公に描いていて、いろんな作品を読んだような満足感もある。
