古本市をはじめ福岡でブック・カルチャーを盛り上げる書店主が、本屋になるまでの経緯や、本への思いを綴った。

30歳を前に、イタリアで人が集まるエネルギーを持つ「場」の力を実感。高校時代を過ごした福岡に戻り、アルバイト経験を経て書店をオープンさせたのは2001年、39歳の時のこと。30代後半、未経験分野、かつ出版不況の中での本屋開業──冒険心に満ち満ちたその経歴には、驚きを禁じ得ない。しかし、鬱屈とした青春期を本屋に救われたという著者は、書店とは町に不可欠の文化的インフラだときっぱり。カフェを併設して大人の場所を作り、イベントで人と人をつなげられる。不況を嘆く前に、本の魅力を伝えるメッセージ発信に「どこまで全力で取り組めるか」だと問う。「本のある暮らし」の意味を再考させられる。

1961年、福岡市生まれ。同志社大学文学部卒業。東京、大阪、イタリアなどで、ファッション関係のショーや現代美術の展覧会などの企画・制作に携わった後、2001年、福岡市のけやき通りに新刊書店ブックスキューブリックを開業。06年、いまや全国各地に広がるブックイベントの先駆けとなった「ブックオカ」を有志とともに立ち上げ、実行委員長を務める。08年に、カフェとギャラリーを併設する箱崎店をオープン。16年には同店内にベーカリーを開設。トークイベントや展覧会を次々に開催しながら、本を媒介に、人が集い、町と人をつなぐコミュニティづくりへと活動の枠を広げている。

    「まちづくり」というキーワードだけだと、つい肩に力が入る感じもしますが、決して独立開業へのレクチャーに留まらない、業界を動かす新たな取り組みなどが、読み物として上手に読者を引き込んでくれます。

    文中に出てくる著作や時代背景もとても興味深く、ネットで検索して、自分なりに解釈しつつ、数日であっと言う間に読み切ってしまいました。

    老若男女を問わず、是非一度読んで欲しい本です。

    身の丈で生きることで、精神的安心感を得られる、というところに共感。

    とはいえ、その「身の丈で生きる」ということが難しいのもまた人生。

    自分ちょっと背伸びしているかも、ちょっと疲れたな、という人は、

    自分を見つめ直す意味でこの本、いいと思う。

    また、著者が紹介している数々の本も、読みたくなってほしいリストに入れてしまった。

    （ただ、本屋で手にとって少し読んでみて、買うかどうか決めようと思っている）。

    紹介の仕方がまったく押し付けがましくなく、

    著者の人生の中でこんな意味があって、こう役に立った・助かった、という紹介をされているのが良いと思った。

    著者とお会いしたことはもちろんないが、この本を読んでいて、著者の大井実さんという人自身の“あたりの柔らかさ”を感じた。彼の語り口は、素直で率直ながらも、“あたりが柔らかい”。そんな一人の人物が、どんな青春を経て働き始め、何を学び何を感じて、そして何を悩んだ挙句に、どのような本屋さんになったかという顛末が滔々と語られている。それと、「本屋業界」というものの舞台裏を垣間見られるという点でも、貴重な本であると思う。

    晶文社のロングセラー「就職しないで生きるには」にインスピレーションを受け、福岡で本屋を営む著者の開店から15年の奮闘の記録。いや、奮闘って感じじゃないな、本や音楽、アート、それにまつわる人が好きで、好きだからどんどんアイデアが湧いてきて、気が付いたらまちづくりの中心になっていた。

    「ローカルブックストアである」というタイトルは、全国チェーンの大手書店やamazonへの対抗などではない。「である」の三文字に、自ら作り上げたまちの中での存在を宣言するかのような著者の自負と決意が感じられる。

    Amazonではなく地元・最寄りの本屋で買うべし。

    福岡市内にある、品揃えでいつもワクワクさせてくれる街のちいさな本屋さん。

    そんな本屋さんの創業前後の取り組みを、店主自らが書いたドキュメンタリーです。

    出版不況の嵐が吹き荒れる真っ只中で、なぜ本屋を開業しようとされたのか。また開業前後のご苦労と、その後の本屋さんを中心に据えたまちづくりイベントの拠点として、コミュニティの中心になっていく過程まで、臨場感たっぷりに描かれています。

    本屋さんに限らず、これから『小商い』をご検討されている方にもおススメ。ミッションの大切さと勇気を与えてくれます。
