グレン・グールド／ ゴルトベルク変奏曲コンプリート・レコーディング・セッションズ1955(7CD+LP)

よくこんなものが残っていたと感心しています。色々なアプローチで何回も弾いていますが、高速演奏のバリエーション、あるいは何故か同じ箇所でのミスタッチ、で取り直しが多く、ひょっとしてあまり練習せずにスタジオ入りしたのかと思ってしまうこともあります。

グールドの弱点も分かってしまうアルバムですが、演奏者はこんなアルバムが出ることを了解していたのか、あるいはそれも含めた著作権全てを放棄していたのか、そんなことも考えてしまいます。

いずれにしろマニアにはよだれが出てしまう内容です。ブックレットも写真、楽譜、録音時のデータなど豊富です。

お目当てのゴールドベルクは、第12変奏の十数回にわたるチャレンジ等、スリルがあって聴きものです。おまけで、当時のCBSのレコード作成プロセスも詳細な説明があり読み物としても貴重だと思いました。すでにいろいろなCDを持っているグールドファンは必携です。

ジャズと違ってリハーサルテイクを何度も聴くのは退屈で苦痛。それでもグールドは出せば売れるからこんなのまで出てくる。

せめて豪華な解説書、レコード、対話CDすべていらないからリハーサルテイクだけコンパクトにまとめて安く出してほしかった。

このセットのLP盤について指摘します。

オリジナル盤（アメリカColumbia ML5060）では、A面：アリアから第15変奏まで、B面：第16変奏からダカーポ・アリアとなっています。

しかし、今回の「ファイナル・エディット」LP盤では、A面：アリアから第16変奏まで、B面：第17変奏からダカーポ・アリアとなっています。

恐らく、オリジナルLPのレーベルに、A:"Variations Nos.1 through 16"となっているので、このミステイクを忠実に「実行」したものと考えられます。残念なことです。

CD６、７とLPはすでに所有されているコアなグールドのファンは結構いらっしゃると思います。グールドの伝記や、彼がどうしてコンサートをやめたのかについて、自著も含めてたくさんありますし、日本では世界的に有名な宮澤淳一さんの評論も数多くあります。その中では、グールドはピッチを維持しながらテープ編集という形で、非常に複雑に編集して、完璧なレコーディング芸術を作ることも主張しています。CD６のティム・ページのインタビューのなかでも、ゴールドベルグの芸術的意味や、彼自身のこの録音についての深い思いが語られています。DVDで録音編集風景の映像画像もあります。したがって、このセット物の魅力は別テイクの５枚のCDしかありません。値段にすると１枚２K円です。おまけに、テイクのそれぞれの録音は、編集する前のエチュードで、グールド自身がほとんど意味がないといっている代物です。だとすれば、ゼンフ・スタジオの『再演』のほうがよっぽど意味がありますが、これはレーベルの関係で収載されません。興味のある方は宮澤淳一さんの「新しいピアノ演奏再生技術をどう位置づけるか」をご参照に（ググってください）。というわけで、この企画ものはミーハーのグールドの消費欲をくすぐる以上の価値はありません。

　グールドの2種類（ライブを入れるともっとあるが）に興味がある方は買ってみてもよいかもです。LPは現在再生環境が整っていないので聴いていません。

内容は1955年の録音のテイクをすべて網羅してあるとのことですが、順番は変奏曲順、テイク時間順の順番にソートされています。はじめは純粋にテイク順に聴ければと思っていたのですが、聴いている内に、というか、納得するまで延々続く同じ変奏のやり直しを聴き流しているうちに、演奏者の熱意とこだわりが伝わってきて改めてこの録音の面白さを味わった印象です。

　考えてみれば当然ですが、テイクは変奏曲ごとに納得いくまで取り直しており、それらを併せて作品にするというプロセスをとっているのだと改めて考えさせられました。また、後年の録音と解釈が異なるのは当然ですが、変奏曲の曲のあいだの間合い、つながりに関する考え方が異なるのがよくわかりました。また、個々の変奏の歌い回し、表現は何故そうなっていったかがわかるところも多々あり、最終的に仕上がったものに込められた様々な表情が改めて実感をもって感じられました。おかげで私の持っているその他のゴールドベルクを引っ張り出して聴く羽目になってしまいました。

　全部聴き通すのは、好きな方ですら少しつらいかもしれませんが、曲そのものというより、大げさに言えば創造の現場に（少しですが）立ち会えたような感覚がして、面白かったです。資料、装丁はちょっと大きすぎだと思います。個人的にはもう少しコンパクトに収めてほしかったです。

　音楽のCDというよりはちょっと特殊なジャンルの体験型？CDでさらに私のように1955に興味ある方、好きな方にとってはおすすめですが、そうで無い方はどうなのかということで星は4つにしてあります。

　目当てのCD1-5だけなぜか私のMacでは読めません。6と7は問題なく読めている状態です。問題が解決したら改めてレビューします。

Gould has long been a fixture in my memory: my father worked in the engineering department of the CBC and I met Gould on more than one occasion (he died in 1982). I remember being impressed with his playing skills and with his social bearing, but didn't know enough about music at the time to appreciate his profound effect on the classical world. As I grew more into classical music, in the years that followed his passing, I recognized just how significant a talent he was, and what a loss to the world his absence made.

This box marks the 85th anniversary of the original Goldberg Variations release, in 1956. I didn't buy his record of this work for a couple of decades after, but it was a major watershed music for me, realizing how an artist can dramatically alter the conventional understanding of a work, and make it....different and even better! This is a lovely box. The LP-sized slip case contains a gate-fold LP remastering of the original disc, a poster, and a book with tons of photos in it as well as the additional CDs. While I like the packaging, the stick-on plastic centers that hold the CDs and DVD in place have a habit of dropping off the end covers, which is annoying. But the book is amazing, with some new photos as well as tons of archival material, including photos of the reel-to-reel boxes that held the masters.

This is a remastered set, and the engineering is excellent on both CD and LP. Comparing the LP to my original of the disc, it's quieter and better dynamics (the quality of the vinyl helps there, as does the remastering of the disc from the original analog source). There's a CD reissue of the remastered Goldbergs, too, and it's better than the older CD I have of the same session. The remastering process took the analog tapes and converted them to digital for editing and processing, then (for the LP) converting back to analog. I know the analog purists will be upset about the conversion to 24/96 digital, but it likely was the best way to produce this set. The sound is, after all this, amazing considering the vintage of the analog sources.

The auxiliary CDs and DVD cover the sessions, interviews, replays, and much more. There's such a treasure trove of material here it's almost an embarrassment of riches, especially for a Gould fan. I've listened to the numerous CDs several times, building knowledge of the Goldbergs to a level I didn't think I would (or want!), but it's been instructive and interesting, and an insights into Gould the artist as a young recording artist. I have compared this remastered version to the later release of the Goldbergs, and both stand up superbly. I can only hope some of Gould's other works, including the second Goldberg, get a treatment like this (without having to wait decades more). I could go on and on about this box, but what's the point? If you're a Gould fan, you need this box despite its cost. If you're not a fan, this box may help convert you. A truly wonderful tribute to the artist.

Bisher bin ich davor zurückgeschreckt diese alte verrauschte Mono Aufnahme vom Juni 1955 zu kaufen. Es gibt ja schließlich die Gouldaufnahme aus dem Jahr 1981, digital mit seinem anderen Konzept. Die ist mit 51 Minuten 12 Sek. länger. Das 4kg schwere Buch gibt Aufschluss warum das so ist. Es fehlen einige Wiederholungen und auch einige Takte. Das ist der begrenzten Abspieldauer einer Vinyl LP von 40 Minuten der damaligen Zeit geschuldet. Hier gibt es die gesamte Aufnahmesession auf 5 CDs zu hören, sämtliche Takes. Das hört sich vielleicht langweilig an, ist es aber keineswegs, im Gegenteil. Das hat was Meditatives, so wie die Goldberg Variantion ja sowieso sind. Klar spielt Gould es sehr schnell, zu schnell, natürlich technisch brilliant. Ich ziehe daher die drei Aufnahmen von Zhu Xiao-Mei vor, weil das eine völlig andere Art der Interpretation ist. Da fließt es.

Auf der anderen Seite ist diese Version ein süchtig machendes historisches Zeitdokument, also alternativlos. Das 280 Seiten dicke dreisprachige Buch ist eine wissenschaftliche Dokumentation plus Interviews zu Hintergründen. Eine 1 CD enthält das komplette Werk am Stück, dann gibt es eine Interview CD dazu und als Highlight eine schwere Vinylpressung im Original Klappcover.

Zum Thema Rauschen: Ja, es rauscht trotz gutem Remaster, wenn man mit Kopfhörer hört. Mit einer guten Anlage hört man dagegen fast nichts vom Rauschen und es ist ein Genuss. Warum die nicht verwendeten Bänder 60 Jahre perfekt gelagert aufbewahrt wurden, kann niemand erklären. Zum Glück für uns, denn schon alleine das Buch ist den Kaufpreis wert. Wer das Rauschen nicht mag kann immer noch als Ergänzung die Zenph Re-Performance Version in Stereo und Digital kaufen.

Les CD sont très documentés ( sessions intégrales ) le livret est complet et donne encore des précisions sur les enregistrements . Bonne qualité . Par compte très déçu par la qualité du vinyle ( souffle , grésillements ) .
