    新進気鋭の著者の本は時々楽しく読んでいるけれど、これはオッと思ったタイトルの割にはイマイチ深く踏み込んでいないな感がある。

    冒頭で、「歴史学者が「司馬遼太郎」を論じることは、ほとんどありませんでした」と来るもんだから、「歴史学者」として今までとなんか変わった突っ込んだ切り口で掘り下げてくれるのかな、と思ったら、ちょっと読むと「読者のみなさんも、ぜひその読解をきっかけに自分の人生に役立つ歴史の思索を試してみてはいかがでしょうか」と。

    なるほど、これから司馬遼を読む若い読者のためのガイダンスなのねと理解した方が良いようだった。

    司馬遼の小説作品と史実の関わりについての考察、問題意識は今までも結構いろいろと本が出ている。

    司馬遼太郎が描かなかった幕末 松陰、龍馬、晋作の実像 (集英社新書)

    日清・日露戦争をどう見るか 近代日本と朝鮮半島・中国 (NHK出版新書)

    西郷隆盛伝説 (角川文庫)

    上記の本では、司馬遼の小説の史実と異なることと合わせて、書かれていてしかるべきなのに意図的に省かれていることなどの指摘がなされている。

    司馬遼の作品が悩ましいのは、小説が史実と異なることではなく、「いかにも史実のように小説を書いてしまっている」その叙述スタイルにある。

    この本では、司馬遼の歴史叙述を「この国の歴史文学のなかで質の良い、最もわかりやすいもののひとつ」と持ち上げながら、読者サイドに読むにあたっての約束事「司馬リテラシー」が必要だとエクスキューズする。

    すなわち、歴史上の人物に対して、しばしばひと言でばっさりと明確に評価したりするのは、大局的、世の中への影響の面から、可能な限り単純化しているので、その点理解してあげないといけないと。

    この「司馬リテラシー」にまだいくつか付け加えられると思う。

    ・作者の仮定・推定の話がいつのまにか断定的に史実のごとく取り扱われる。

    ・まるで資料の裏付けがあるようなリアリスティックな叙述がよくあるが、眉に唾をつけるべし。結構資料の裏付けなどない。

    ・創作手法として、作者の人物評価、歴史認識がまずあって、それに基づいて史実、資料の取捨選択が行われている。

    ・さも史実のことのように書きながら、史実と違う点を指摘されるとそれは娯楽小説だからと逃げる。

    この本では司馬遼以外のいくつかの歴史小説家を紹介して、その中でも特筆すべき作家として山田風太郎を挙げているのは良いのだが、両者で大きく異なる歴史認識、歴史の叙述の手法にまで踏み込めていないのは残念。

    また歴史と小説の叙述というトピックでは避けて通れない鴎外以降の「歴史そのままと歴史離れ」という問題意識、それを後年受け継ぎ司馬遼が描けなかった昭和史と真摯に向き合った大岡昇平の歴史小説観についても触れられていない。

    冒頭で「歴史学者」として本書執筆に臨む気構えは感じながらも、著者の他の著作から受ける期待に対してはやはりイマイチかな。

    とはいえ、たぶんこれから司馬遼を読もうという人たち向けの本で、別に論戦なんて望んでいるわけでもなさそうだからそこらへんは忖度してあげるのがリテラシーかな。

    司馬遼の講談小説は依然として面白いことは面白いので、kindleでもっと安くなってくれないかな。（ずいぶん昔の小説なのに不思議とほとんど安くならない）

    時代が変わろうが、そこに人間が存在するかぎり

    人間や社会が幸せになる定石は変わらない。

    現代を生きる我々が、歴史から学ぶのは

    先人たちの幾多の失敗と成功を通して得られた教訓であり、

    突き詰めれば、人の在り方に収斂される。

    膨大な歴史を眺めてきた司馬遼太郎氏は、

    我々に貴重な結論を提示してくれている。

    本書の最終章で詳しく述べられているが、

    それは、「共感性と自己の確立」である。

    他人の心の痛みを、自らの心の痛みとして、

    思いやれる精神性。

    他人と協調しながらも、

    決して揺らぐことのない価値観を大切にして、

    他人と比べず、自分の人生を生きる。

    司馬遼太郎氏が小説を通して我々に送り続けたメッセージは、

    昭和前期の暗黒時代の総括を経て、

    よりよい人間を創り、よりよい社会を創りたいという渇望であった。

    著者はテレビで拝見しているとおりのわかりやすい語り口で、読みやすかったです。

    司馬作品を知らない方でも「日本人はなぜ悲惨な戦争を止められなかったのか」という問題意識があれば、興味深く読めると思います。

    著者は、司馬作品に通底する「歴史観」を時代順に読み解き、日本が無謀な戦争に至った原因を探るだけでなく、ますますグローバル化していくこの先の日本人の「理想的な在り方」まで提示されています。
