    Daniel Keyes (1927 - 2014) was born in Brooklyn, New York, and received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Brooklyn College. He was the author of eight books, including the classic Flowers for Algernon, first published in 1966, which would go on to sell more than five million copies and inspire the film Charly. He also worked as a merchant seaman, fiction editor, high school teacher, and university professor, and won the Hugo and Nebula awards for his work.

私の心の一冊です。
この作品は、名作ですね。私がこの作品を知ったのは昭和60年くらいです。当時　BOØWYが大好きでよく聴いてました。しかし、好きになった時にはもう解散していてボーカルの氷室京介さんが　ファーストアルバムに「FLOWERS for ALGERNON」のタイトルでアルバムを出されました。とっても素敵な歌詞で何度も聴いた曲です。そこから本を買い初めて、ちゃんと読んだ作品です。この作品は映画にもドラマにもなりましたね♪ とっても心の清らかで優しいチャーリイーが　どんどん天才になって行き人の醜さなんかを理解したり　ネズミのアルジャーノンとも…。この作品の良さは　最初からです。どんどんと知識豊かになっていく文章には心を掴まれます。そして、今回　ヒグチユウコさんが表紙絵を描かれたのを知って　また購入しました。是非読んで欲しいです。私の心の一冊です。皆さんに優しい日々を。

    チャーリィがアルジャーノンを通して自分がどうなっていくのかを知っていったように俺はチャーリィを通して、自分には時間がないってことを感じさせた。俺はなぜ時間がないと感じるのか、そして自分はなぜこの知能を失うことを恐れているのか、それを使って何をしたいのかを考えさせられた。　本当にやりたいことは何か。優先順位を考えさえてくれた。ありがとう。　いやまて、なぜ俺はそれをしたいと思うのだろう。これもまたチャーリィがなぜ知能を上げることに興味があったことのように何か俺の過去と関係があるのか？　これは俺がオリジナリティとなる理由の一つなのか？
